Otter Tail County Historical Society's 84th annual meeting will be held on Thursday, September 22, at Stub's in Battle Lake featuring Award-winning author Peg Meier. A social hour runs from 5:30-6:30pm, followed by dinner and Meier's program.
A reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune before happily retiring in 2006, Meier has written seven books about ordinary Minnesotans and their extraordinary stories. Her latest work, Wishing for a Snow Day: Growing up in Minnesota, contains candid interpretations of the joys and pains of childhood through the decades.
Beloved pets. Holiday rituals. Schoolyard antics. Teenage perspectives on a world at war. Childhood is a mixed bag of challenges and joys whenever one grows up. For her new book, Meier unearthed a wealth of material ranging from diary entries to reminiscences to newspaper columns, along with several hundred photographs. Humorous touches and reality checks are offered in equal doses, and the result is a fascinating spectrum of experiences as Minnesotans do what every adult must do. Grow up!
In addition to Peg Meier's presentation, a silent auction featuring an eclectic array of items will be available. New this year is the This Day in History series. These are luncheons that take place on the anniversary of local historical events. Perfect for group outings, each program includes a lunch prepared by the historical society board of directors along with a private presentation by a local historian.
