I Love to Read Month-Community Read of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"
February is "I Love to Read" month and the Fergus Falls Reads committee invites the whole community to participate in a community-wide read of the classic novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", by Mark Twain.
According to the American Library Association, Huckleberry Finn was the 5th most frequently challenged book during the 1990s. The FF Reads committee hopes that by encouraging the thoughtful reading of this novel and offering a number of insightful community discussions and events, together we can explore the book's more challenging themes, as well as the themes of friendship and acceptance.
Book discussions at the public library on February 7 and February 21 at 6:00p.m. These discussions are open to all community members who have read the book and wish to discuss and learn a bit more about the book, its author and the time period during which the book was written.
One large Community Book Discussion at M State in Legacy Hall on Thursday, February 16 at 5:30p.m. Two panels on Censorship and Huck Finn as American Myth will lead this community-wide discussion of the book and its themes.
Over the weekend of Feb. 24-25 the 1993 Disney movie “Huck Finn” will be shown--exact dates and times to be announced.
On March 5 the OTCHS will explore Otter Tail County's Military Past at Noon - Discussion will include: Mark Twain and the Civil War.
*An opening event during the first weekend of February--Frostbite Festival--is also in the works. At this point, we are hoping to secure an actor to portray either Mark Twain or Huckleberry Finn during a Community Introduction to the novel and its history.
We are also working with the PWLC on a coordinating event.
