PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MUSEUM HOSTS NATIONWIDE READING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The Otter Tail County Historical Society invites the public to take part in a free nationwide reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 5pm at the Otter Tail County Museum in Fergus Falls. People across dozens of time zones will gather together at the same time to read from this historic document. Anyone wishing to read from the words written by Thomas Jefferson is welcome. The first 25 people will receive a free America 250! flag courtesy of the Fergus Falls Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

This commemoration of the first public reading of the document on July 8, 1776 is free and open to the public. A gigantic copy version of the original document will also be on hand, and participants can write their own signature, or "John Hancock" if you will, on the paper, too. Visitors can also visit the museum exhibit A Legacy of Service honoring the men and women of Otter Tail County who served in the military.
