City Council Approves ''No Mow May''

At the April 15 City Council meeting, “No Mow May” was approved. This allows residents to refrain from mowing their lawns during the month of May. The purpose is to allow grass to grow freely, providing habitat for pollinators, insects and birds. As grass, dandelions and clover grow, they can offer an early food source for emerging insects. Moreover, participating in No Mow May can save time and resources typically spent on lawn maintenance, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with lawn mowers. “This token gesture is a small step for native pollinators,” said Public Works Director Len Taylor.  “We encourage residents to consider doing more, such as planting a small pocket prairie with a variety of native flowers.” Check the city’s website for more about native gardens. (City code requires grass to be shorter than 6". For this month only, that is being waived.)
